Goodwin Procter has hired Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's US securities and commercial litigation partner Marshall Fishman in New York.
Fishman joins Goodwin's New York office as head of its commercial and financial litigation practice. Fishman joined Freshfields in 2010 after moving from US law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel.
He joined the magic circle firm alongside Timothy Coleman from Dewey & LeBoeuf and Walter Stuart from Vinson & Elkins. The trio were brought in to bolster the firm's US litigation capability. Stuart has since rejoined Vinson & Elkins.
Fishman advises financial institutions on market manipulation claims, with a particular focus on defending class actions. Highlights for Fishman include advising JP Morgan on a range of suits arising out of the collapse of two Bear Stearns hedge funds that held collateralised debt and mortgage obligations.
Speaking to Legal Week's sister title, the New York Law Journal, Fishman said he moved to Goodwin Procter for the opportunity to expand and lead its commercial and financial services litigation practice in New York.
"It's a new position to the firm and that certainly was a big attraction," Fishman said, noting Goodwin Procter's New York commercial and financial litigation practice has about 10 partners and 25 to 30 associates.
He also said he was drawn to the firm's 300 litigators in the US. "It's helpful to have that base," he said.
Fishman called Freshfields a "first-class global law firm with first-rate lawyers" and said he left on good terms.
In June 2016, US litigator Michael Lacovara left Freshfields to join Latham & Watkins in New York, just six months into his term on the UK firm's four-person senior management team, while in October New York corporate partner Doug Bacon left the firm for Kirkland & Ellis in Houston.
Freshfields most recent hire in New York was Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft corporate partner Aly El Hamamsy, who joined in November last year.
Other key US hires for the firm include Peter Lyons, the former head of Shearman & Sterling's M&A practice, former Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz M&A partner Mitchell Presser and former Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom banking partner James Douglas, all of who joined in 2014.
A spokesperson for Freshfields, said the firm "has made great strides in the US market, and the US remains a key area of focus and growth for the firm", noting especially the hire of El Hamamsy in New York.
"We are thankful for Marshall Fishman's contributions to the firm and wish him well in his future endeavors," the spokesperson said.
