Clyde & Co launches blockchain consultancy for insurance sector
Firm teams up with UK technology business Team Blockchain

Clyde & Co has launched a new blockchain and smart contract consultancy for its global insurance clients.
The new business, called Clyde Code, sees the firm team up with UK technology consultancy Team Blockchain on a preferred supplier basis.
Team Blockchain consultant, Gary Nuttall, who spoke at the firm's partner conference in 2016, will be the lead technical consultant. He will be supported by Team Blockchain's global network, which includes 50 software developers and IT engineers.
Nuttall will work closely with a Clydes team led by London insurance partners Lee Bacon and Nigel Brook, Dubai partner Sally Sfeir Tait and San Francisco technology partner Christina Terplan.
Clyde's lawyers will advise on the legal aspects of smart contract creation, contract enforcement, dispute resolution and investigations into smart contract failures.
Bacon said: "Effectively what smart contracts allow you to do is replace a traditional written legal contract. Instead, you can automate that transaction. If you have an agreement where, for example, goods are delivered and money is exchanged, automating that process cuts out admin costs and is quicker."
The firm is currently advising Middle East banking group Emirates NBD Bank on the development and enforcement of blockchain and smart contract technology.
Earlier in the year, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer became the latest law firm to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) technology, after trialling its use in the firm's Manchester legal services centre. This was followed by news in July that Cravath Swaine & Moore had signing a deal with UK software company Luminance to use AI to to improve efficiency and cut costs.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson.
