Use this checklist to establish lean communication protocols with your client and to ensure that communications with opposing counsel, consultants and other stakeholders are efficient, purposeful, and effective throughout the legal project lifecycle.

Checklist:

|
  • Determine what level of communication the client prefers and in what format.
  • Ensure that the full project team within the firm is aware of the communications protocols for the project.
  • Eliminate all unnecessary communications.
  • Develop framework for regular meetings (i.e., project reviews) and discuss who should attend and follow-up communication protocols.
  • Consider if each communication is lean, in particular by being relevant, concise, and clear. (See LEAN COMMUNICATION CHECKLIST.)
  • For client communications: Consider whether it is justifiable to disturb the client. If so, keep it lean.
  • For non-client communications: Consider what will best advance your project goals in terms of the level of collaboration and types of communication.

Lean Routine:

|
  1. Have you suggested a lean comms protocol to the client and explained what it involves? Is the client comfortable with this or is some extra layer of reporting required such as:

a.  notification of when a particular spend level has been reached; or

b.  a routine provision of all copy correspondence and/or traveling drafts?
