Mishcon de Reya is no longer acting for Brexit campaigning group Leave.EU on its appeal against its £70,000 fine from the Electoral Commission.

Leave.EU, which was fined by the commission after it found that the group had broken electoral laws by exceeding spending limits, had turned to Mishcon for advice on its challenge to the ruling.

The group filed its appeal on 12 June, when Leave.EU co-founder Arron Banks (pictured) appeared before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee's inquiry into 'fake news'. Banks later walked out of the committee, refusing to answer any more questions after the session ran beyond its scheduled time.

In a statement released at the time, Leave.EU said: "Leave.EU is striking back at the scheming Electoral Commission lying at the centre of the anti-Brexit campaign. [...] We look forward to seeing their representatives in Court."

However, a Mishcon spokesperson confirmed that the firm is no longer acting for Leave.EU, and declined to comment further.

Mishcon has a record of acting on political disputes and is currently advising Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge on disciplinary action taken against her after she accused party leader Jeremy Corbyn of antisemitism.

The firm also made national headlines when it represented pro-EU campaigner Gina Miller in her successful case against the government regarding the triggering of Article 50. In January, the Supreme Court ruled that the government could only trigger Article 50 after parliament had voted to begin the process of leaving the European Union.
