Winston & Strawn has made its first London lateral hire in over two years, taking on Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe corporate heavyweight partner Anthony Riley.

Riley had been a partner at Orrick since 2011, when he joined from legacy Norton Rose.

His practice covers corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactional work and he ranked second in the U.K.'s most active deal lawyers by volume in the first half of 2017.

He has significant experience in the energy and infrastructure sector and is the first lateral joiner for Winston's London office since January 2017, when it hired Ian Borman from King & Wood Mallesons.

Earlier this month Winston boosted its Hong Kong base with the hire of capital markets partner Khoon Jin Tan from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

Other recent U.S. to U.S. firm partner moves in London include White & Case's hire of City finance partner Fergus Wheeler from King & Spalding.

Meanwhile last month Crowell & Moring significantly boosted its City presence with the hire of five partners from Squire Patton Boggs.

Earlier this month Orrick ousted its Paris-based Africa practice head Pascal Agboyibor after an independent investigation that found evidence of inappropriate conduct.

A spokesperson for Orrick said in a statement: “We are grateful to Anthony for his contributions to our firm and wish him the best.”
