Judge John Owens of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, who won fans in certain corners of the internet last week by referencing "Game of Thrones" in a published opinion, has a habit of sneaking pop culture references into his legal writing. Owens garnered attention from CNN, Above the Law and across the Twittersphere after penning a July 5 opinion reviving class action claims against Northern Trust Corp. that called out the writers of "Game of Thrones" for jettisoning a seemingly key storyline in the HBO show's final season. (Spoiler alert.) The judge vowed not to render a precedential case meaningless "the way that Game of Thrones rendered the entire Night King storyline meaningless in its final season." The dig at the GoT writers was hardly the first time Owens dropped hints about his viewing habits in opinions. Below is a brief compilation of Owens' Hollywood hat tips—some more successful than others.
