Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison's former China managing partner, Jeanette Chan, will leave the firm after three decades to join a Hong Kong-based fintech company.
A Hong Kong partner specializing in cross-border mergers and acquisitions and private equity investments, Chan will join online financial services provider Airwallex Pty. Ltd. as chief legal and compliance officer. Corporate counsel Corinna Yu will also join Airwallex, as an in-house lawyer.
Airwallex has been backed since 2017 by Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd.—a client of Chan's. Last year, she advised Tencent on a $1.58 billion joint investment with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in Chinese state-backed media group CMC Holdings. In 2017, she represented Tencent on a $604 million investment in Chinese online retailer Vipshop Holdings Ltd.
Chan headed Paul Weiss' China practice for more than two years until December, when she was succeeded by Hong Kong corporate partner Betty Yap. Chan also heads the firm's Asia communications and technology practice.
Chan spent almost her entire career at Paul Weiss, which she joined in 1986, practicing in Hong Kong, New York, Beijing and Shanghai. She relocated to Hong Kong from New York in 1992 for a two-year stint in-house as senior international legal adviser at the now-defunct British telecom giant Cable & Wireless Plc. Chan returned to Paul Weiss in 1994 and made partner in 1997 as the firm's first female partner in Asia.
“Jeanette has made countless contributions to Paul Weiss and our clients for more than three decades,” the firm's New York-based chairman, Brad Karp, said in a statement, adding that Chan is celebrated as an innovative deal lawyer, a pioneering leader and valued mentor.
The departure of Chan leaves Paul Weiss with just two partners in Hong Kong: Yap and John Lange, who is also a corporate lawyer. Beijing-based corporate partner Judie Ng Shortell, who joined Paul Weiss with Yap in 2016 from Linklaters, is also qualified to practice in Hong Kong.
