Demetrice Allen, a former associate with Littler Mendelson who went missing after leaving the firm early this month, died from injuries sustained in a car crash, according to police officials outside Atlanta. He was 30 years old.
The South Fulton Police Department announced Allen's death on Friday, seven days after police there said he had last been seen.
Allen, who had been based in Littler's Orlando, Florida, office, had traveled to Atlanta looking for work, friends of his told Milwaukee station Fox6 Now. Before he went missing, he had been scheduled to interview for an in-house position with Delta Air Lines' legal department in Atlanta, Fox6 reported.
Allen was last seen on Dec. 6 while out with friends from Ohio State University, where he attended law school, authorities said.
South Fulton police issued a missing person's notice on Dec. 10 requesting public assistance in locating Allen. On Friday, the department said that Allen had been involved in a fatal auto accident in nearby Clayton County, Georgia.
Police in Clayton County said Allen died later the same day of the accident, on Dec. 7.
Allen appeared to be the at-fault driver in the accident on Interstate 285, according to a statement Clayton County police provided to CNN. He was "alert, conscious and combative" when authorities arrived, but "due to his condition at the accident scene, officers were unable to identify him," the statement said.
He was transferred to a local hospital for treatment, where he was initially expected to survive, the Clayton County police said. When police followed up on Allen's condition, they found he had died from his injuries, and custody of the body was given to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
According to Littler, Allen was an associate at the firm for one year. His last day was Dec. 2, just four days before he was last seen. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Demetrice Allen," the firm said in a statement. "We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this very difficult time."
Prior to his time at Littler, he was an associate at Ice Miller in Columbus, Ohio from 2015 to 2018.
In statement, Ice Miller managing partner Michael Jordan said the firm was "deeply saddened" to learn of Allen's death. "Demetrice summered with us in Columbus while in law school and spent the first few years of his career in our Labor & Employment and Litigation practice groups," Jordan said. "He was a very positive and upbeat person who will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
