Privacy remains one of the top issues for in-house counsel and law firms, and those issues underscoring the need for data privacy have become even more pronounced with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has generated numerous privacy, data protection, security and compliance questions. These challenges are driving the need for companies to ensure their platforms are not only secure, but forward looking.
How does the California Consumer Privacy Act play into this? Some companies have asked the attorney general to push back the enforcement date to January 1, 2021, citing complications caused by COVID-19. And some think the pandemic could be the impetus to finally get traction on a national data privacy law.
Businesses and legal departments may not have the data privacy spend to account for the impact that COVID-19 has had on employee data.
