How often during the week do you work out? I work out six to eight times a week.

At what time during the day or evening do you work out? I mostly work out first thing in the morning, around 6 or 7 a.m. Sometimes, I log a second workout at the end of the day.

What's your go-to routine?  I've been boxing for about a year at this amazing club, New Orleans Boxing Club – it is also where professional boxers train. I have a coach, and his name is Iliyan "Ochi" Kolev. Iliyan is a former Bulgarian national boxing team member and an international Golden Gloves champion. During my sessions with Iliyan, we do shadow boxing, pushups, heavy bag work, speed bag work, double-end bag work, sparring, mitt work, and jump rope. With the stay-at-home orders in place for COVID-19, I was doing my boxing workouts in my backyard by using a palm tree for a heavy bag. I decided after a few workouts to have an actual heavy bag delivered. I also ride my bike three days a week with a Coach Wes Johnson, who is a doctor and semi-pro cyclist. Wes and I ride 15 to 20 miles in about 45 minutes to an hour, often doing bridge repeats, 40/20s, sprints, and exercises for building endurance.

How long does it take? My workouts last about an hour to an hour and a half.

Why do you like this routine? These routines teach me how to deal with physical pain. Boxing, HIIT exercises, and biking teach you how to find your limits under physical stress. For example, getting punched and blocking punches, while already feeling out of breath, is a very humbling experience.

What does regular exercise do for you? It generally takes the edge off and keeps me calm and balanced throughout the day, both at work and at home. It also lifts my attitude.

How long have you been exercising regularly? I started trying to reclaim my physicality about six years ago, but I have leveled up in the last year by working out six to seven days a week.

In what ways have you changed your routine during COVID-19 crisis/Stay-at-home mandates? I am now boxing at home instead of at the gym. I have had to adapt to having less equipment. I have also switched from HIIT sessions at the gym to road biking for a few hours. At one point, I was hitting my palm tree as a heavy bag for five to six rounds, three days a week. Working out at home has definitely provided challenges, but I am finding new ways to maintain my routine.

How do you convince yourself to work out when you don't want to? It is hard getting up and getting started, especially because I am sore most days. However, having great coaches and trainers helps motivate me and mix up the workouts. I also know that the pain during a workout is temporary, and after the workout, I feel much better and have more energy for the rest of my day.
