In August, top lawyer appointments seemed to be a rate in line with the end of last summer, which may mean high hopes for other open legal department positions left vacant by the COVID-19 recession. Also, more diverse candidates are taking the general counsel seat, but obstacles still lie ahead.

Over the past three months, chief legal officers and general counsels were appointed during the COVID-19 pandemic at a rate similar to last summer.
With the start of September, summer hiring comes to an end. What is usually a high time to earn a new job remained that way for top lawyers. From our June, July and August reports, top lawyers seemed to be appointed at a normal rate unlike in March and April when the number of appointments took a dip and slowly rebounded in May.
Companies like Google, Coca-Cola Company and Prudential made splashes this summer with the announcement of their new GCs.
