"Today's legal functions need to ensure that they run efficiently, structured appropriately, are strategically aligned and have a clear vision." — Chris Fowler, GC, BT Technology

Lao Tzu said, "Work when it's time." That's it. "Work when it's time." (Tao Te ChingWork when it's time, yes, absolutely, but equally, don't work when it's not. And this is what we've been saying about planning before execution. Don't dive in until it's time, but then when it's time, get on with it.

This is an easy sell to lawyers. Give a new project to a lawyer and they will happily dive in. While many lawyers plan their work, many are content to do the planning on the hoof. This is not ideal. To go right to execution is akin to taking off in an airplane without a flight plan, compass, or fuel gauge. You might end up in the right place, by experience, intuition, and inspiration. Or, you might not. On the other hand, when the planning is done and it's time to execute, then it's time. Execution should be done effectively and efficiently. So what are the keys to doing our routine legal work in a lean way?
