The Department of Justice announced Thursday an $88 million settlement of civil claims brought by family members of the deceased and survivors of the 2015 Mother Emanuel AME Church mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

On June 17, 2015, Mother Emanuel congregants welcomed 21-year-old Dylann Roof, who entered the church, participated in the Wednesday night bible study and then killed nine people inside. The victims included Mother Emanuel’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, along with the Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, the Rev. Daniel Simmons, Depayne Middleton Doctor,  Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, Tywanza Sanders and Myra Thompson.
