Money is easy to count and quantify. Law firms have that going for them. But legal departments seeking to attract and retain top legal talent have some alluring cards to play, as well, such as the chance to help run a business, not just provide advice.

As New York-based legal recruiter Katherine Loanzon told Law.com's Phillip Bantz last September, "the main reason that a lot of lawyers go in-house is that they want to be able to make business decisions."
