Aiming to retain existing workers and attract new ones, some companies are looking to beef up a longstanding benefit: paid sick leave.

For the past six or seven years, laws requiring companies to provide workers with paid sick leave have been cropping up at the state and local levels, said Sharon Cohen, a partner at Davis+Gilbert who works with employers. But on the heels of workers leaving jobs at record-high rates, some companies are offering benefits above and beyond what the law requires—and may set new norms for paid sick leave policies in the process.
