Five Benefits of Having a Mentor

You know you should have a mentor. As a young professional seeking opportunities to progress, finding a mentor and utilizing their knowledge and expertise offers benefits that are difficult to acquire any other way. Leaders agree that having a mentor was vital to their development and advancement.

Some law students and young associates may want to go it alone, but the advantages of being a mentee far outweigh any reason for trying to succeed without help. You may not realize it, but potential mentors are generally willing to share their knowledge and expertise.

"One of the challenges I had to overcome early in my career was to know when to ask questions and seek the advice of other people, which didn't always come naturally to me," says Shai Schmidt, a partner at  Glenn Agre Bergman & Fuentes, "Over the years, I have learned that many senior attorneys are eager to share their wisdom and experience with younger lawyers and see them succeed."
