The powerful California Medical Association has appointed Jamie Ostroff as chief legal officer, leading the association's legal and regulatory efforts.

Ostroff will replace Francisco Silva, who had been with the organization 17 years. He left in March to become CEO of the California Primary Care Association.

Ostroff joins CMA from Hill Physicians Medical Group, the largest independent physician group in Northern California, where she served as chief legal and compliance officer. Prior to that role, Ostroff was associate general counsel at Blue Shield of California. Early in his career, he was an attorney at law firms Slovak Baron & Empey, Barger & Wolen, and Goodstein & Berman.

The California Medical Association represents the interests of doctors and has nearly 50,000 members. The Sacramento-based group is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in California, doling out more than $15 million on lobbying and contributions to state political candidates since 2015, according to an analysis by CBS News.

In a statement, California Medical Association CEO Dustin Corcoran said Ostroff is one of the most talented attorneys in health care.

"As we face the most sweeping and rapid changes in our health care delivery system, [Ostroff's] deep understanding of the health care industry and his impressive record of success will help CMA navigate those changes for the benefit of patients and physicians alike," Corcoran said.
