The previous lesson started this mini-series on Future Proofing by stressing that law is a people business. This lesson takes a closer look at the people, in particular law firm talent.

During the recent talent wars, many law firms loaded up with associates, in the belief they were Future Proofing their business to meet demand. Now, many of the same firms have taken steps to manage their attorney ranks. Again, they might argue, this kind of "capacity management" or "rightsizing" is Future Proofing their business. Dress it how you will, this means shedding talent.

Truth be told, stocking up and down on talent isn't good business and it's not real Future Proofing. People aren't printer cartridges which can be acquired as needed. Remember, law is a service business and talent is everything.
