Consumer Class Action/Mass Tort Defense
Chava Brandriss and Patrick J. Curran Jr. of Davis Wright Tremaine have stepped in to represent Navy Federal Credit Union in a pending class action over alleged breaches of consumer credit or privacy laws. The complaint was filed Sept. 9 in Georgia Northern District Court by the law offices of Shimshon Wexler. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Michael L. Brown, is 1:22-cv-03744, Brown v. South Korean automaker Kia Motors has retained attorney J. Randolph Bibb Jr. of Lewis, Thomason, King, Krieg & Waldrop as defense counsel in a pending consumer class action. The complaint, filed Sept. 9 in Tennessee Middle District Court by Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein and Baron & Budd, alleges that certain Kia vehicles have defective airbag inflators which can cause severe and sometimes fatal injuries. Michael K. Grimaldi, Jon P. Kardassakis and Daniel Segal from Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith have entered appearances for ColourPop Cosmetics in a pending consumer class action. The complaint, filed Sept. 9 in California Northern District Court by Bursor & Fisher, alleges that ColourPop's eyeshadow palettes and eyeliner products contain unsafe color additives. Corporate Transactions
VillageMD has agreed to acquire primary, specialty and urgent care provider Summit Health-CityMD for approximately $8.9 billion, including investments from Walgreens Boots Alliance and an affiliate of Evernorth, a subsidiary of Cigna Corp. The transaction, announced Nov. 7, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2023. Chicago-based VillageMD is advised by Sheppard Mullin and Latham & Watkins. Summit Health-CityMD, based in New York, is represented by Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and McDermott Will & Emery.
