Sell in May and go away. So goes the centuries-old adage of traders keen to avoid what they deemed to be the worst performing period of the year.

There is some research to back up the idea that in years gone by the summer months proved less lucrative for share price gains and that more market volatility would creep in too. These days such an investment strategy would be dubbed simplistic at best but it no doubt still plays on some investors’ minds.
