A transgender inmate settled a lawsuit with the Minnesota Department of Corrections earlier this month after alleging that her placement in a men’s facility violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act and the state constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law.

Gender Justice, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit, and co-counsel at Robins Kaplan announced inmate Christina Lusk’s $495,000 settlement with the department. Lusk, a transgender woman, claimed that the DOC consistently misgendered her and forced her to face ongoing harassment due to her placement in a men’s facility.
