Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman, novelist Richard Kadrey, and horror writer Christopher Golden filed the class action complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against OpenAI and Meta Platforms for direct copyright infringement, vicarious copyright infringement, violations of 17 U.S.C. Section 1202(b) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, unjust enrichment, violations of the California and common law unfair competition laws, and negligence.

OpenAI was hit with another copyright infringement suit by book authors, including comedian Sarah Silverman, last week alleging their copyrighted materials were used to train the artificial intelligence software program ChatGPT without their permission.
An identical suit was filed July 7 against Meta Platforms and its AI product called LLaMA, which was released in February. Similar allegations include that software engineers allegedly copied "massive amounts of text" from various sources, including the plaintiffs' books, to help the text output produce natural language.
