An attorney for Tom Girardi grilled the federal government’s expert on the first day of a hearing to determine whether the once-lauded plaintiffs’ lawyer was competent to stand trial.

Girardi, 84, appeared at a federal courtroom in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, wearing a light gray blazer, khaki pants and house slippers. He sat quietly, observing the morning’s proceedings alongside his public defenders.
