As we know from lean law, the first step in any assignment is to plan, and the first step in planning is to understand the client's goals, and the first step in understanding goals is open communication. Everything done well starts collaborative discussion and active listening.

This snippet from lean law reminds us of the importance of emotional intelligence (EQ). Emotional intelligence can be defined as skills people use to manage their own emotions wisely, to maximize their chances of influencing others constructively, and achieve their goals. (See, "EQ Exercises Help Lawyers Optimize Their Leadership and Business Development Potential.")

With EQ comes empathy, self-awareness, motivation, active listening, and a host of people skills. You don't have to spend long in legal practice to appreciate the value of these attributes.
