The Colorado Supreme Court issued a divided opinion in an issue of first impression on the constitutionality of the Denver Police Department's use of a reverse-keyword warrant to obtain user-related data from Google in their investigation of a suspected arson that killed five people in August 2020.

When an apparent arson left five people dead in Colorado, the Denver Police Department (DPD) had no suspects. With no leads, the DPD sought a "reverse-keyword warrant" which ultimately resulted in Google disclosing five Colorado internet protocol (IP) addresses which had searched for the location of the fire in a roughly two-week period prior to the fire, according to the opinion.
