WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
PRICE OF PROGRESS - Law firms are accustomed to seeing legal tech prices grow each year, or whenever they renew their sales contracts. But now, they're seeing costs rise faster than before. Due to the fact that some locked in prices over several years, not all law firms are facing rising technology expenses right now—but eventual impact, albeit delayed, seems inevitable. In this competitive environment, however, slowing down tech investment isn't often an option. As Law.com's Rhys Dipshan writes in this week's Law.com Barometer newsletter, law firms will have to figure out ways to get more bang for their tech bucks. THE PARENT TRAP - Mothers and caregivers face a double burden when working in the legal field, leading them to vote with their feet and walk out the door, according to a new report from the ABA Commission on Women. As Law.com's Amanda O'Brien reports, more than 8,000 respondents, along with 10 nationwide focus groups, took part in the survey, titled, "Legal Careers of Parents and Child Caregivers," which looked at how caregivers are treated in the workplace. "The differences the data reflects are that mothers are disproportionately not getting important assignments, not being assigned matters with travel, not having sponsors and mentors, and there's a disparity in income particularly as income rises," said Fine, Kaplan and Black member Roberta Liebenberg, who co-authored the report.
ON THE RADAR - Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher partner Elizabeth K. McCloskey has entered an appearance for Meta Platforms in a pending digital privacy class action. The suit was filed Sept. 9 in California Northern District Court by Wisner Baum; Coffin Law; and Pendley, Baudin & Coffin. The complaint alleges that the co-defendant H&R Block has installed tracking pixels on its website that send consumers' viewing histories to third parties like Meta Platforms, in violation of the state's Invasion of Privacy Act. Co-defendants Google and parent company Alphabet are represented by Willkie Farr & Gallagher. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge P. Casey Pitts, is 5:23-cv-04953, Hunt v. Meta Platforms, Inc. et al. Stay up on the latest state and federal litigation, as well as the latest corporate deals, with Law.com Radar.
