"This new model of bar exam is consistent with Oregon's high standards and emphasis on protecting the public by assessing an applicant's legal skills and knowledge," Oregon State Bar President Lee Ann Donaldson said in a statement, adding that the new exam will ensure that new attorneys are practice-ready when they join the Oregon bar.

The NextGen bar exam is a work in the progress as the National Conference of Bar Examiners prepares to have the exam ready for its July 2026 launch. Amidst ongoing changes to the test and process, five jurisdictions have now announced plans to adopt the new exam.
Maryland, Missouri and Oregon bar admission agencies have announced their intention to begin using NextGen in July 2026; Wyoming intends to first administer the exam in July 2027; and Connecticut has not yet finalized its first administration date, according to NCBE's announcement.
