The manufacturer of Chicco KidFit booster seats plans to oppose its own class action settlement Wednesday, citing rampant fraud in the claims process.

The settlement, reached earlier this year, would pay consumers who purchased six kinds of Chicco KidFit booster seats. Lawsuits alleged the booster seats were falsely marketed as safe for kids as light as 30 pounds. Artsana USA Inc., the defendant, sold fewer than 875,000 booster seats during that period, but, according to court filings, the settlement has generated more than double that number of claims, and as many as 99% of them are fraudulent.
