WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

BRINGING IT ON HOME - Legend has it that when you become an in-house lawyer, your company presents you with a gold badge depicting an eagle clutching two 5-Hour Energy drinks under the words, "Do More With Less." A new Harbor Global law study found that legal departments pushed more work onto their in-house teams this year and used AI and automation while "significantly" cutting spending on outside counsel. Meanwhile, one-third of the 170 companies surveyed reported having fewer in-house staff this year than in 2022. However, as Law.com's Chris O'Malley reports, the tide could be turning, as 49% of companies said they anticipate lawyer head count to increase in the near future, which could continue to put a dent in law firm demand as only 22% said their teams plan to increase their use of outside counsel.

SOCIAL SKILLS - Latham & Watkins, Mayer Brown and Greenberg Traurig led all large law firms in this year's Social Law Firm Index, published annually by internet marketing and consulting firm Good2BSocial. The study measures firms' engagement, thought leadership, performance on social platforms, podcast effectiveness and other metrics to establish who "gets it" and who doesn't. But, as Law.com's Patrick Smith reports, "getting it" in the coming year might be more difficult than ever as law firms grapple with tricky challenges like figuring out what to do (if anything) with X (formerly known as Twitter) and AI.

ON THE RADAR - Adam V. Orlacchio and James G. Gorman III of Blank Rome have entered appearances for Reverse Group Inc., doing business as Reverse Health, in a pending trademark infringement and false advertising lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 2 in Delaware District Court by Womble Bond Dickinson on behalf of Golo LLC, accuses the defendant of engaging in a 'bait-and-switch' scheme by using the 'Golo' mark in its online advertisements and leading unsuspecting consumers to believe that they are making a purchase with the plaintiff when they are actually making a purchase with the defendant. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, is 1:23-cv-01089, Golo v. Reverse Group. Stay up on the latest state and federal litigation, as well as the latest corporate deals, with Law.com Radar
