An unjust enrichment filed by the grandson of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cervical cancer cells were taken without her consent and used in transformative medical research for decades, may proceed against pharmaceutical company Ultragenyx.

Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman from Baltimore County, Maryland, was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital for cervical cancer in the 1950s. Without her knowledge, doctors cut out cervical tissue samples before she died from the disease in 1951.
