Although a $2.75 billion agreement settling compensation disputes between student-athletes and the National Collegiate Athletic Association brings closure to how athletes are paid for their name, image and likeness, it may open colleges and universities up to additional legal challenges, including Title IX compliance.
Jason W. Gordon, a partner with Reed Smith in the entertainment and media industry group in Chicago, told Law.com Friday that the settlement involving three lawsuits against the NCAA was expected. However, he said that how schools will pay student-athletes and remain compliant with Title IX remains unresolved.
