A Florida jury has ruled that Chiquita Brands International is liable for murders committed by death squads that the banana grower paid protection fees to in Colombia.
Chiquita has been instructed to pay 17 plaintiffs at least $2 million each for the deaths of eight of their relatives in a banana-growing region of Colombia. Combined, the company has been ordered to pay $38.3 million.
