The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday recognized “absolute immunity” for former presidents over some, but not all, of their official actions, sending the prosecution of ex-President Donald Trump back to a trial judge to sift through allegations related to the 2020 presidential election.

In a 6-3 vote in Trump v. United States, the high court turned down Trump’s claim for “absolute immunity” from criminal prosecution for all of his official acts, though the majority preserved a broad shield for presidential acts that will likely further delay, and perhaps prevent altogether, Trump’s trial over his 2020 election conduct.
