A federal judge has awarded nearly $2 billion in damages for the families and Navy service members impacted by the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, finding Iran liable for the deadly terrorist attack that killed 17 sailors and injured about three dozen.

U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras wrote the District of Columbia federal court opinion Monday granting $1.46 billion in punitive damages, $301 million in solatium damages and $188 million in pain and suffering to 112 plaintiffs who sued Iran seeking monetary damages for the Cole bombing.
