A federal judge in Massachusetts awarded a software company nearly $17,000 in sanctions after the party had to file numerous requests for documents and then received tens of thousands of pages of nonsearchable documents.

In an Aug. 29 opinion, U.S. District Judge Jennifer C. Boal for the District of Massachusetts granted Massachusetts-based Acquia’s request for sanctions against the plaintiff, information technology consulting company North America Photon Infotech. The court ordered Photon to pay $16,912 for “egregious” document production and a failure to appear at a deposition.
