BREAKING: BD Settles Thousands of Bard Hernia Mesh Lawsuits
The settlement with Becton, Dickinson and Co., or BD, resolves nearly 25,000 cases in federal multidistrict litigation and more than 15,000 in state courts in Rhode Island, where Bard is headquartered.

- The settlement is confidential but, in its most recent quarterly report, BD disclosed accruals for the hernia product liability claims, plus related legal defense costs, of about $1.7 billion on June 30, and $1.9 billion on Sept. 30, 2023.
- The first bellwether trial ended in a defense verdict in 2021, followed by awards of $250,000 and $500,000 in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, a Rhode Island jury awarded $4.8 million in the first state court trial.
- This year, U.S. District Judge Edmund Sargus in the multidistrict litigation in Ohio ordered the parties to mediate.
Bard's parent company agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits involving more than 30 of its hernia mesh repair products.
