Siding with the victim of a sexual assault, a Missouri appellate court upheld a $149 million punitive damages award against a four-star Hyatt Regency hotel in St. Louis, concluding the damages award was supported by evidence at trial.

In a Dec. 3 opinion, the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District denied attempts by the Hyatt Corp., doing business as Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch, to appeal a jury verdict awarding plaintiff Shannon Dugan $28 million in compensatory damages and $149 million in punitive damages. Dugan claims she was sexually assaulted by one of the hotel's security guards in 2016.
