Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas and the Little Rock-based law firm Kutak Rock filed suit in Arkansas federal court Monday alleging a former library director's First Amendment rights were violated when a county judge terminated her in retaliation for opposing censorship efforts.
Takeaway: Hector's suit comes at a time when several states are considering or passing legislation that either prohibits or allows book bans. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed "The Freedom to Read Act" in December 2024 in an effort to protect access to books for New Jersey students while providing a process for those who object.
