Merck & Co. announced on Tuesday that it has agreed to pay $58 million to end investigations by 29 states and Washington, D.C., into ads for its painkiller Vioxx.

Merck has kept untold numbers of lawyers busy since its Vioxx headache began in 2004. The job of managing the mess has fallen to general counsel Bruce Kuhlik. We’re told that Kuhlik made the key decisions in this settlement, with an assist from John Beisner at O’Melveny & Myers. In addition to Beisner, it looks like Merck hired lawyers in each of the 30 jurisdictions to sign settlements with each attorney general.
