After Chief Justice William Rehnquist died in 2005, conventional wisdom was that in terms of doctrine, little would change because President George W. Bush would replace him one-for-one with a conservative.
But last week J. Harvie Wilkinson III, one of the top candidates for chief justice at the time, proved that might not have been the case had he gotten the job.
