The day after her appointment to oversee discovery in massive litigation against Prudential Life Insurance, a special master has withdrawn amid allegations that impermissible conflicts of interest barred her involvement.

Lauren Handler said Tuesday she was bowing out not due to any actual conflict but because she did not have the confidence of counsel for the plaintiffs: 234 former Prudential employees who accuse the company of, among other things, conspiring with their own lawyers to keep them from suing it.
