PHILADELPHIA – Hildebrandt Baker Robbins consultant Lisa R. Smith predicted in a blog post in September that the legal industry could shed 17,500 non-partner lawyer positions in the coming years thanks to smaller summer classes, efficiency through project management, the use of legal process outsourcers and a growing tier of non-partner track staff attorneys.
Some may have balked at that number, but on the whole consultants have predicted over the last few weeks that the business of the legal profession is set to go through a stratification of who is performing legal work within the law firm, within the law department and within the growing realm of competitors offering legal services.
