From reports published daily, detailing layoffs, furloughs and salary cuts at firms of all sizes and in all areas of the law, a scenario of infectious negativity seems to dominate the legal industry. Accompanying each of these reports, the public relations statements of the firms involved tell a different story: “Today’s tough times have required some reductions, but we’re optimistic going forward.” Inferentially, the word “hopefully” probably should appear in all of those statements. As a managing partner in a firm of a type not in the news (a traditional intellectual property firm with 35 lawyers and about 100 employees), I was concerned as to how new associates in firms like ours react to this infectious negativity, emanating as it does from much larger firms. To learn more about their reactions, I asked the first-year associates in my firm to express their views on the subject. Here is their response:
