Corporate bankruptcy filings were down in New York last year, especially in the Southern District, a change bankruptcy attorneys attribute to the growing availability of credit for struggling companies as lenders become more confident that the economy will pick up.

Corporate filings were down 7.5 percent nationwide, to 56,282 in calendar year 2010 from 60,837 in 2009, according to data released by the U.S. Court system.
