Black residents of Fort Lauderdale’s Sistrunk neighborhood moved from Key West following back-to-back hurricanes in 1909 and 1910. Another hurricane and a push from the city has forced another mass relocation, but residents claim this round was unjustified.
The population has been decimated by a systematic targeting of black homeowners with frivolous citations for code violations in an effort to spur the city’s redevelopment plan for the area, according to a federal lawsuit.
