Microsoft announced it will buy Internet telephone service Skype in an $8.5 billion cash deal, the software company’s largest acquisition in its 36-year history.
With 170 million customers per month, Skype serves as an alternative to the traditional phone network, providing customers with free voice and video messaging via the Internet. Users can also use the service to place low cost phone calls to landlines and mobile devices.
