Michael B. Stoddard, Cobb County, Ga., Superior Court senior judge, remembers the date — “the sixth day of January, 1971″ — he landed in Vietnam. Based in Cam Ranh Bay as an assistant staff judge advocate in the Air Force, he spent the next 16 months traveling the country as a prosecutor, defense attorney and military judge.

His next stop was the U.S. Taiwan Defense Command, where he worked on international law in Taipei and discovered the 3,000-year-old art of bonsai. The tiny plants have given him years of enjoyment — while testing his patience — ever since.
