Greenberg Traurig is beefing up its securities litigation practice. The firm has recruited Sutherland partner Terry R. Weiss to head its local securities litigation group. Weiss chaired Sutherland’s broker-dealer litigation and arbitration practice group, whose clients include Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. Weiss is also an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority FINRA, the largest non-governmental regulator for securities firms doing business in the U.S.
Weiss’s addition is part of a drive to expand the firm’s securities litigation capabilities, according to the co-chair of Greenberg’s national securities litigation group, Brad D. Kaufman. Greenberg lists 71 attorneys firmwide in its securities litigation practice. Jeffrey M. Smith is the only attorney in its Atlanta office listed as a securities litigator. He has represented broker-dealers including Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., Firs Trust China and Bear Stearns & Co. Inc., according to the firm’s Web site.
