SAN FRANCISCO — HTC Corp. acquired nine patents from Google Inc. last summer and promptly used them to file more patent infringement claims against Apple Inc. in their ongoing global smartphone war.

HTC lost some of that ammunition last week in a case before the U.S. International Trade Commission. On Friday, Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender threw out patents HTC had acquired from Google and asserted against Apple. Related documents in the investigation are confidential.
