SAN FRANCISCO — A group of construction workers filed a proposed class action Wednesday against one of the biggest Bay Area construction contractors, alleging that the company’s management required them to work off the clock and forced them to sign a so-called “safety sheet” that declared meal and rest breaks had been provided when they actually hadn’t.

The plaintiffs attorney, Gay Grunfeld of Rosen, Bien & Galvan in San Francisco, said the sheet is written in English, despite the fact that her clients and their co-workers at Ghilotti Bros. Inc. speak Spanish.
